MOSS POINT - The Office of Representative Jeramey Anderson is sponsoring a Town Hall Meeting in Moss Point to discuss the upcoming Moss Point School Board elections. This will be the second year the residents of the Moss Point School District are responsible for electing the school board members. The purpose of the Town Hall meeting is to discuss the election process and answer any questions the public may have regarding the new process.
Governor Bryant signed Senate Bill 2463 into law in April of 2017, the bill included a floor amendment by Representative Anderson that replaced the appointment system that was used by the Moss Point School Board in the past. Now according to law school board trustees will no longer be appointed by the municipality but instead elected by the people of Moss Point, Mississippi.
The school system and the community will benefit from the new process that is designed to make sure school board members are being held accountable.”Change is difficult” said Anderson, “But I know if we work together as a community we can begin to take the right steps to improve our schools.”
Moss Point schools are continuing to improve. Kindergarten gained 253 points on the kindergarten readiness test - more than any other district on the MS Gulf Coast. Third graders taking the test for the first time had a 93% pass rate. That rate is up from 77% when tested three years ago. Total pass rate for 3rd grade was 98%, a rate that was up from 86% just three years ago. As far as accountability, the high school recently jumped to a “B” rating from the Mississippi Board of Education. This is a major step in the right direction from the “D” previously held. Anderson hopes the election process will further improve accountability and continue to yield positive results.
The meeting will be held at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, August 14th at the Eastside Community Center in Moss Point, MS. Refreshments will be sponsored by Friends Barbeque and LaChelle’s Coffee.
