FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 12, 2018

It is increasingly apparent that our country’s leaders, the Executive Branch and the members of Congress that enable the administration have a different set of priorities than what is best for our Nation. We are now led by a group of people who decided that it was more appropriate to take $9.8 million from our Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help fund their unnecessary “Zero Tolerance” plan through the ICE agency.

Simply put, this is unacceptable. In 2017, three of the ten hurricanes that made landfall were a Category 3 or higher. In total, we lost 3,361 lives and suffered approximately $282 billion in damage. We now see our East Coast friends and family desperately escaping the path of Hurricane Florence. As residents of South Mississippi, we should not be OK with the disregard to devastation a natural disaster can cause. Unfortunately, our elected representative for the 4th Congressional District is not only OK with the disregard for emergency funding, but he is one of the 67 Republican congressmen who voted against legislation proposed and passed by the Senate to help victims of Hurricane Sandy back in 2013.

I refuse to believe that this is who we are in South Mississippi. I demand accountability. There is no time like the present for us to stand together and call for accountability this November by voting out those who give reckless regard for human life. We need to return to a country that is equipped to take care of all its citizens - instead of using our resources to commit acts against humanity.
